Dan Risku is a well-rounded attorney professional with twenty-seven years of broad experience in specialist and generalist legal and business executive roles at blue-chip companies, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina and The Prudential Insurance Company of America.  Throughout his career, he has provided and delivered successful strategies, solutions and results to business and legal challenges and opportunities. Dan is recognized as a results-oriented legal and strategic business advisor whose experience, ethics and credibility enables strong relationships, creative solutions and successful results.

Dan currently serves as Of Counsel with the Shanahan Law Group, a Raleigh, North Carolina business litigation and corporate boutique law firm. Previously, Dan was the Vice President for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina's large employer/national account and Medicare business segments, a position held from 2005-2009.  Dan spearheaded a strategic, financial and operational overhaul of the large employer segment, achieving significant profitability and revenue growth, and service operational improvements. Dan's other positions at Blue Cross were Vice President of Strategic Development, 2000-2005, where he was responsible for corporate strategy and mergers and acquisitions, and Vice President & Deputy General Counsel, 1996-1999, where he was the managing legal and compliance officer.

Prior to Blue Cross, Dan worked ten years for The Prudential Insurance Company of America, where he held various legal counsel responsibilities, advising on managed health care and insurance operations, provider contracting, risk management, antitrust, ERISA, fraud and abuse, regulatory compliance and corporate transactions.

Dan received his Juris Doctor from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Finance and Management from Minnesota State University, Mankato, Minnesota.  He has been admitted to practice law in Minnesota (1982) and California (1988 Inactive Status).

Dan's current community affiliations include Carolina Ballet, Inc., Chair, Board of Directors, and Be Active North Carolina, Vice Chair, Board of Directors.

Dan lives in Chapel Hill with his wife Cyndy and two daughters.  Dan is a lifelong runner who keeps fit running trails throughout the Triangle and the streets of Chapel Hill. He also enjoys getting the full value of his green fee on area golf courses.
